Set in the 1920s, a young woman is stuffed into the bridal sedan chair by force to marry an old man as his third concubine. To avoid her tragic destiny, she protests desperately but fails. She idles away her life by watching operas in theaters or playing mahjong all day long. From time to time she would seek chances to meet her former lover?a cavalier, but her secret meeting is revealed by her husband’s second concubine who has an ulterior motive. Her adultery is caught by her husband on the spot, but the second concubine receives nothing but a slap on the face from her husband. Frustrated and humiliated, she tears all the red lanterns in the courtyard. Their husband, also their master, becomes furious and puts the adulterous lovers and his second concubine to death. Before dying, the two concubines forgive all the past quarrels, hugging each other in love and forgiveness.
