Chinese movies also have incomparable effects on acquainting the learners with the culture of Chinese-speaking countries. As it is known to all, Language and language application can¡¯t exist without culture. Movies, like books, are a culturally special medium. Thus, in the course of language learning, culture learning becomes an inevitable and essential process, which can liberate the learners¡¯ mind and lead them to appreciate other people¡¯s ways and values. Nonetheless, learning is a rather complicated and demanding process. In the textbook of senior middle school, there are certain pages introducing foreign culture, yet they are limited.
Classical western movie proves to be a suitable medium. Endowed with its unique characteristics, movie brings vivid and authentic images intermingled with culture to learners. It helps learners to learn with fun.
Let¡¯s take an English movie as example:
Sense and Sensibility, an Oscar winner film directed by Ang Lee can well illustrate this point. Some scenes in the movie are quite impressive. Because of the legal system which strictly held to the male line, the sisters had no rights to inherit the least of their father¡¯s large property, which thus made the girls¡¯ life and marriage quite difficult, regardless of their attractive appearances and good natures. This law no longer applies to our age, but it¡¯s the embodiment of the culture in that generation. Therefore, ¡°movie can lead us to an appreciation of history as well as an appreciation of literature¡±
