This is the film adaptation of Mao Dun's epic tale of rivalry in old Shanghai. Two business clans make war against each other using bonds, warlords, banks and even women, as they both face threats from the rising communist movement. Though Mao Dun was highly critical of the imperial-style capitalism of old Shanghai, he shows a keen understanding of the inner workings of markets and manipulation. There are many books and films about old Shanghai in the West, but none tell the Chinese side of the story with such eloquence and beauty.
